UnZipping Files

You might consider printing this page and use it as a guide as you deal with unzipping.

All of our program packages consist of more than one file.  To eliminate the inconvenience of downloading and dealing with more than one file just to get a program running, we package all of the program files into one file for downloading.  In addition, to make the download faster, this package containing all of the files is made smaller by compressing.  We do this with a PKWare, Inc. product called PKZip.  So, that means you should have there unzipping facility.

There is quite a bit of information on this page.   But the nice part is that you will only need go through it one time and then you can use the PKUnzip facility again and again without repeating its download and installation.

Do you Already have PKWare Software?
Let's try to see if you already have the software.  Press the "Start" button and go to "Programs".  Do you see "Pkware" in the list?   If so, you have it and can move to the next section.  If you don't see it, you still may have it because someone may have moved it inside another folder on your "Programs" list.  Look through those or the "Start|Find|Files or Folders..." (Windows Help can give you some details on finding files. If this seems like too much trouble, just assume you don't have it.

If you don't have PKWare
If you're not familiar with downloading programs, you might want to go to our Download Instructions page before proceeding.   PKWare is offered as shareware.  That means you can get starting and try the software at no cost.  All of the details of using and registering this software can be found at their site which you'll visit if you press the icon below (After you're finished at the site, use your Browser's "Back" button to return here.):

pkzip.gif (13155 bytes)

Once at their site, select "PKZIP for Windows".  On this page, select the "PK270WSP.EXE" link and the software will begin the download process.

Installing PKWare
This is an easy step.  Start by Right-Clicking the "Start" button and then clicking the "Explore" option.  This activates the Explorer which you will now use to find the file "PK270WSP.EXE" which was downloaded in last section.   If you followed our advice, it will be found in "My Documents".   Otherwise, you will need to search.  If you have no idea where you put it, do the following:

  1. Click the "Start" button, go to "Find" and then click "Files or Folders...".  You should see the following dialog:
    FindFiles.gif (29422 bytes)
  2. First, make sure that drive "(C:)" is in the "Look in:" field.  If it isn't, click the "Browse" button and select the "C:" drive.
  3. Next, type "PK270WSP.EXE" (not the apostrophes) into the "Named:" field.
  4. Press the "Find Now" button.

At this point whether you've used the Explorer or the Find File facility, you should see the "PK270WSP.EXE" file.  Just double-click it, follow the instructions and you should get an installation.

Unzipping Files
First, use the Explorer (Right-click "Start" and click "Explore") or the file finder (Click "Start", go to "Find" and then click "Files or Folders...") to find the file you downloaded (e.g. "EMP-DM10.ZIP").  Once found, double click the file.  Either PKUnzip will start or you will get the following dialog box:

OpenWith.gif (20781 bytes)

If you get this box, scroll through until you see "pkzipw" and then point at it and click once.  It's a good idea to check the "Always use this program to open this file".  That way you can just double click zipped files and PKUnzip will just automatically start.  Now press "OK".

In either case, when PKUnzip starts, you'll see something like the following:

PKZAppl.gif (22503 bytes)

Click on the "Unzip" option in the menu bar at the top of the screen.  Select "Extract files..." from the drop down menu.  Now, in sequence, press "Browse", "OK" and "Extract".  You can now close the PKUnzip program because the files have been extracted from the zipped file and placed in the same directory as the zipped file.

Your are now ready to install the downloaded program.
